Rafael Nadal wins the French Open to draw level with Federer on Grand Slams

Rafael Nadal has beaten Novak Djokovic 6-0 6-2 7-5 in the French Open men's singles final. In doing so, the Spaniard has equalled Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam men's singles titles.

At 34 years old, Rafael Nadal produced one of his greatest ever performances to beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the men's French Open final atΒ Roland Garros.

The win was sealed with an ace as Nadal dominated the world number one from start to finish.

The first set lasted just 45 minutes as Nadal overwhelmed Djokovic to win all six games, the Serb made just 42% of his first serves with Nadal only making two unforced errors.

The Spaniard lost his first game in the second set opener, however, that didn't dent his drive and he was soon back on top.

Nadal won the next five games as he rolled back the years on the way to clinching the second set 6-2.

To his credit, Djokovic rallied in the third set and when Nadal broke him in the fifth game, the writing seemed to be on the wall. However, Djokovic broke for 3-3.

Nadal powered through though, breaking in the 11th game of the third set before going on to serve for the match which he closed out in style.

Speaking about the win, Nadal said: "It's been a very tough year. Winning here means everything to me. It's not about equalling Roger on 20, for me today it's just a Roland Garros victory.

"Roland Garros means everything to me. I spent most of the most important moments of my tennis career here. Thank you very much to everybody here. Just playing here is a true inspiration. The love story I have with this court."

Neither male nor female champion dropped a set en route to winning this year's titles.Β

Speaking after the defeat, Djokovic said: "I want to say a huge congratulations to Rafa, your team and your family. What you are doing on this court is unbelievable and not just on this court Today you showed why you are the king of the clay. I have experienced it."

Djokovic adds: "I am not so pleased with the way I played but I was definitely outplayed by a better player on the court today. It's been a fantastic couple of weeks. The situation is very difficult for everyone worldwide but we have the possibility to play the sport we love. Thank you to everyone who made this tournament possible."
