St Pats and Rovers are the main tips for Roddy and Stuey

As winter morphs into Spring - someone better remind the recent weather that as well - it's time for the new League of Ireland season to take root.

The first set of games kick off this Friday, so tonight on Off The Ball marked the return of our domestic soccer slot with Roddy Collins and Stuart Byrne.

But who do they expect to challenge reigning champions Dundalk for this year's title?

Stuey expects both Pat Fenlon's Shamrock Rovers and 2013 champs St Patrick's Athletic, who face each other in Tallaght on Friday night, to be "there or there abouts" in the championship reckoning.

Roddy also backed Pats to do well because "they have signed well".

Meanwhile, Stuey believes Pat Hoban's departure from Dundalk "is the biggest loss of all the teams", having contributed a major part to last season's title win.

Although, he is positive about Shamrock Rovers' chances, the former Shelbourne midfielder still believes they are missing a thing or two.

"I don't think they are where Pat [Fenlon] wants them to be at this moment. I still think they lack a couple of players. But much in the same way that Cork were able to utilize the window last summer to strengthen their charge, I think if Rovers can do something similar in the summer, then they can definitely challenge."

As for last season's runners-up Cork City, Stuey believes it will be a "different dynamic" and reckons that if they can harness the energy and organisation from last season, they can challenge again, while both he and Roddy debated whether ex-Man United and Celtic midfielder Liam Miller can have a positive impact.

Roddy said he would be interested to see how the teams cope with the drain of recognised goalscorers from the league during the summer.

"Overall, I don't see a 20-goaler. I think the team that's going to win the league will win it with someone with 15 goals and chipping in from other areas of the park. For me, Rovers are the team that are going to do that," he said.
