"We used to joke about each other that we were called the hyena club" - Alama Ieremia remembers Jonah Lomu

"There's many of us over here that have played with Jonah for a long-time and known him as a close friend. We are all still in shock."

That was former All Black centre Alama Ieremia as he joined Off The Ball and Brian O'Driscoll in remembering Jonah Lomu, who passed away at the age of 40 this week.

The 45-year-old played with Lomu at the 1995 and 1999 Rugy World Cups and shared his thoughts on a gentle giant who helped change global rugby forever.

"My memories really were obviously around that time, having Pacific Islanders in the All Blacks and you're basically a brotherhood. And to have Jonah in the team around then, it just made you feel belonging to be there. And the biggest memories were at his prime and going through the processes of him being fit for the '95 World Cup. Those were enjoyable times," he said.

"We used to joke about each other that we were called the hyena club because in fitness training for the All Blacks, we'd always be at the back, struggling to breathe and almost dying and making these high-pitched voices like struggling hyenas."

Lomu BOD's Most Feared Opponent

When Brian O'Driscoll was asked for his most feared opponent at our 3Arena Roadshow, it was only going to be one man.

Ieremia also recalled the "genuine human being" that Lomu was amid his superstar status, and spoke about how he "redefined the game" in the 1990s.
