Dave Kilcoyne can’t wait to get on the plane to Japan after Ireland won their final RWC warm-up game against Wales.

It was Joe Schmidt's and Rory Best’s last game at home for Ireland and Kilcoyne was delighted to give them a good send-off.

“It was a lot of lads’ last games in the Aviva so we really wanted to put in a big performance, a big Irish performance for them.

“They’ve delivered a lot for Irish rugby over the years and I think it’s a fitting way to see their last performance in the Aviva.

“As the summer series has gone on, I think we’ve built our performances, which is exciting going into the World Cup,” Kilcoyne said.

Ireland have improved massively since being hammered by England only two weeks ago.

“I thought we were poor against England. There’s no point in denying it. We lacked hunger and physicality which was the most disappointing thing.

“You have an incredible defence coach in Andy Farrel and we all knew that our defence was off that day.

“Thankfully over the last couple of weeks that’s really picked up and hopefully we can bring that aggressive defence into the World Cup,” Kilcoyne commented.

The Munster prop has been in great form for Ireland during the summer and is pushing for a starting place in Schmidt’s side.

While Kilcoyne is happy with his recent performances he recognises that there is plenty of competition for places in Ireland’s front-row.

“There’s two Lions and myself looking for that number one spot. I suppose that’s a good headache for coaches and unfortunately, I’m not in the position of picking the team.

“You just deliver as best a performance you can to help everyone else around you look good… To deliver a performance worthy of an Irish shirt,” Kilcoyne said.

It’s safe to say the Limerick man is excited for the World Cup after a long summer of preparation.

“I can’t wait to get on the plane. Hopefully Japan Airways do a lovely business class with some nice steak and a bit of vino,” Kilcoyne said.
