'Win shows how hard we work' | Cooney praises Ulster work-rate after Bath win

Ulster have started their Champions Cup campaign with a one-point win over Bath at the Recreation Stadium.

Ulster's John Cooney was man of the match, scoring a try and kicking two conversions and a penalty to help Ulster to a 16-17 win.

Rob Lyttle crossed for the visitors' last try but it was Bath who put the pressure on late on.

In the final moments, Bath got themselves into a two-on-one position charging towards Ulster's line before Jacob Stockdale managed to wrestle the ball away and over the line to end the game.

Speaking after the game, Cooney said that Stockdale's last minute heroics was testament to the team's work-rate.

"I think there at the end... I thought the game was over. They nearly scored at the end but I think it shows the collective and how hard we work for each other to see Jacob get back and stop him in the corner.

"I missed an easy kick in the first-half and I was kicking myself at half-time. I knew it's all about how you respond and I knew if we came back out and lost by one point I'd be pretty heartbroken.

"We won those big moments we didn't last week against Munster. There were several moments that we lost but we talked about it but it's all about trying to win the next moment and try and get back into the game.

"It's huge we've actually had a bit of purchase away in England the last couple of years. We have to come here again to play Harlequins away, but these are the games we really enjoy and we create our own atmosphere."
