Donnacha Ryan: "Leinster were full value for their win"

Former Munster second-row Donnacha Ryan paid tribute to Leinster after they claimed a fourth European Cup in Bilbao on Saturday.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Dave McIntyre after the match, he said: "We're obviously disappointed that we didn't get the result in the end but from our point of view, during the week, we were training very well.

"We had some good training sessions during the week and unfortunately lost a couple of key players during the week but that's the way it goes.

"The last 10 minutes of the game, the discipline went against us again and that's something that's been carrying on throughout the whole season and unfortunately it came back to bite us in the last 10 minutes but look Leinster were full value for their win.

Asked if all the withdrawals were key to the defeat, Ryan said: "I think there's a bit more resilience than that. It's not as if we were down to 14 men or anything like that. I think Remi came in and did a good job.

"It was very tough conditions out there but that's just the way it is. You've got to adapt and it was disappointing at the end because we put the pressure back on Leinster and at 12-9, we got back the restart but unfortunately we did  a bit of a tip-tackle and gave away a penalty and another penalty the far side gave Leinster three points to level it up but that's something we're going to have to look at and it's very frustrating from our point of view."

Going into the second half, the former Irish international was feeling confident saying: "Yeah, I felt we were strong in the scrum and felt strong in the forwards as well. I thought we really attacked their breakdown but it was, kind of, a stop start game.

"I think we came out pretty well at the start of the second half but the only frustrating thing is we didn't kick on from there but that's just the way it is," he added.
