Eddie O'Sullivan assesses Sean Cronin's chances of playing his way into Schmidt's plans

It was two wins from two in the inter-pros for Leinster and one of the star performers was Sean Cronin.

The hooker was in impressive form against Connacht - earning the Man of the Match award along the way - but while his provincial form rises, he has yet to become a key figure for Ireland under Joe Schmidt.

Former Ireland head coach Eddie O'Sullivan joined us on Wednesday Night Rugby and we got his take on the player and his potential to make more of a mark at international level.

"It depends on how Joe Schmidt sees him," said Eddie of Cronin's prospects.

"I think for Ireland, he's had cameo roles off the bench very successfully because he is one of the quickest hookers in the world. He's absolutely electric off the mark and I actually bumped into him before the Autumn internationals and he was pretty down about the fact that he hadn't got into the squad, you know.

"I think he went back and just felt he had to play his way back in and I think he's responded to the fact that he wants to put it up to the coach to say, 'Look, I'm back and I know you thought my form was off at the start of the season but I'm certainly back with a bang now.'"

Eddie then touched on the role Schmidt may see Cronin fulfilling.

"Maybe the coach sees him as that impact player off the bench," he said.

"If he has a bugbear, at times his darts can go a bit awry. He has those moments. But look, all he can do is put pressure on the coach to put him back in.

"He's going into Europe, you'd like to see him getting a shot here in Europe and get a chance to prove himself. If he doesn't get a shot at Leinster in Europe, if he's again off the bench kind of scenario, it could cost him because Joe Schmidt will look at the guys who are starting in Europe now and how they do going into the Six Nations. If you're not starting for your province and you're getting 20 minutes off the bench, it's very hard to fight your way into the Irish squad."
