Gordon D'Arcy has revealed this week that the achievements of the Irish Paralympic team at the London 2012 Games inspired him to get involved.
D'Arcy, who is now a board member of Paralympics Ireland spoke at an event in London, "A few of you may be wondering why I’m here this evening."
"For me, I was hugely inspired by the events of London 2012, and the quality of the performances by elite Irish athletes. The incredible achievements by Team Ireland in 2012 were an inspiration to us all, not just the medals, but the stories behind these athletes who were representing Ireland on the biggest stage and doing so with pride, talent and skill."
With Rio 2016 just around the corner, CEO of Paralympics Ireland, Liam Harbison said, “Looking ahead to Rio, we are aiming to have a team of about 45 athletes, and we’ve set a medal target of about eight.
"We’re on track behind our Chef de Mission, Denis Toomey, and we look forward to doing both the Irish public and the Irish diaspora extremely proud when they tune in to watch the Games in Rio.
“Now, with just over 200 days left to go, we are calling on Irish everywhere to get behind the team and support us as much as possible to help showcase the superb capabilities of our elite Irish Paralympics athletes,” he finished.
