Joe Schmidt thinks Paul O'Connell has the capabilities to be an excellent coach

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has said he expects former Ireland captain Paul O'Connell to enter coaching in the near future.

O'Connell retired on Tuesday afternoon after receiving medical advice on a hamstring injury. O'Connell's last game came against France in the World Cup when he was substituted at half-time.

Speaking to Irish Rugby TV on Tuesday afternoon, Schmidt said O'Connell has the capability to become a top quality coach:

“With the intellectual property he holds, particularly as a lineout player but as a forward and certainly as a breakdown specialist, I think he’s got a wealth of ability to contribute technically. But also the character he is, I think he'd be incredibly good in that team environment".

The Limerick native won every major trophy in the Northern Hemisphere, apart from the World Cup and Schmidt added that "he’s made an incredible contribution, and the jersey he has left behind is going to be incredibly difficult to fill for whoever takes his place".

The Ireland head coach added that O'Connell's presence will continue to be missed in the camp.
