John Muldoon: "Robbie Henshaw's best position is full-back"

Connacht captain John Muldoon has described Robbie Henshaw's continued selection in midfield as "a travesty", saying his former teammate is better suited at full-back.

Muldoon has also insisted that Henshaw himself would prefer to play in the 15 position.

Despite making his Ireland debut at full-back against Canada in 2013, he has since cemented his place as a starter in one of the two centre positions. The Athlone native has also been a regular starter at inside-centre since joining Leinster in the summer of 2016.

Speaking at the Aviva Fan Studio at the G Hotel in Galway during Ireland's Six Nations win over France, Muldoon lamented the fact that Henshaw may never get an opportunity to impress at full-back given the wealth of options available there in contrast to the 12 and 13 positions.

"A Ferrari can pull a trailer, but you don't want your Ferrari pulling a trailer. He can do the job, but you get a tractor in at 12 and the Ferrari outside him."

"Robbie's best position is 15, absolute fact. And he wants to play 15. But because Robbie is Robbie, you need him on the ball. Robbie went to Leinster and they didn't have a natural 12, and then Ireland didn't have a natural 12 so then Robbie went in at 12."

When asked by host Adrian Barry if the sight of Henshaw in a 15 jersey for Ireland was ever a possibility, Muldoon admitted that's unlikely to be the case.

"He's never going to get the opportunity [at full-back], because he's such an intelligent player we need him close to the ball. To me, playing him at 12 is a travesty to him but like everything you need your best players on the pitch, and if Robbie's your best 12 you play him at 12 if you've got no other option."

The Aviva Fan Studio returns to the Aviva Stadium this Saturday for our second Six Nations clash with Italy, and Aviva are giving away two VIP passes to join them on the day. Just follow the details on their Facebook page below.
