Johnny Sexton: Revenge wasn't a motivating factor as Leinster beat Scarlets

Johnny Sexton insisted revenge wasn't a motivating factor as Leinster powered past Scarlets 38-16 in the Champions Cup semi-final at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Dave McIntyre after the match about the one-sided nature of the game, he said: "Yeah, no one expected it. When you're preparing for these types of games  - you're prepping in your mind for a one score but we spoke about just trying to win the moments in front of us. We won a lot of those, we lost a couple.

"Just after half time I thought we were scoring and they turned it over and they're a dangerous side so those key moments in the game where we won most of them, we lost a couple but I would have liked to stay on for a bit longer but Leo obviously wanted to get Joey on and give him some more game time.

"Robbie Henshaw could have come off after being out for three months! He could have given him a break but what an incredible effort by him.

"We looked back at that semi-final last year and we were shot defensively. Look, they're a dangerous side. If you give them the ball that we gave them last year - they can cause you problems. Luckily we limited most of that ball. That got a few chances but we dealt with them well at times.

"Some our our mistakes like our discipline early on wasn't great and we'll have to have a look at that.

"It was the same against Saracens - you can't give Leigh Halfpenny, Owen Farrell last time, these three, six, nine points - you've got to learn from that," he added.

Referencing last year's loss to the same opposition in the semi-final of the domestic competition, he said: "In some ways we used what happened last year, I know it's a long time ago, but at the same time, we're a very different team.

"Up front, Dan Leavy started on the bench, Scott Fardy wasn't here, Jordi Murphy didn't play, the second-rows didn't play - I think Jack came off early and Cian came on, Sean Cronin didn't play so a very different team to what played that semi-final last year.

"We spoke about that a little bit as well - it is a different team and we've got to use the lessons from that but at the same time it's a fresh game. It's still a semi-final, we don't need any extra motivation!"
