'Leinster ran at the trunks, and not at the branches'

Grenoble head coach Bernard Jackman believes Leinster's phases during the weekend win over Castres were "poor"

"They weren't really asking questions of Castres and it's a very simple philosophy that you teach kids. When they go into contact, you've got to imagine the tackler is like a tree and that you run at the branches rather than the trunk. If you look at Leinster, a lot of their carriers, they're running at the trunks," said Bernard on Off The Ball about Leinster's 21 - 16 win in France.

However, Bernard was full of praise for Leinster's mental strength as they ground out a key win in the Rugby Challenge Cup tie.

But he does believe that Leinster's self-belief took a knock following the defeat to Munster and that it is showing in their approach of late.

And he also feels that the province will need to be more rounded later in the competition.

Bernard also took a look at the Ulster's defeat to Toulon and he was impressed by the power and clinical nature of the French side's play and felt Ulster's game-plan and shape was a bit unclear.

He believes that the dominant nature of Toulon's win shows how difficult it will be for an Irish side to win the Champions Cup.

Bernard also felt Munster's performance in the win over Saracnes was a real "step up to what they produced against Sale".

"I haven't seen a forward pack play as well for a long time," said Bernard.
