Leinster's hopes of progressing in the Champions Cup all but finished with defeat at Toulon

Leinster were defeated by the reigning Champions Cup winners Toulon in what is their third defeat in a row in the pool stages of the competition. The defeat all but destroys their chances of making the last eight of the Champions Cup.

Leinster arrived in France in a must-win situation but failed to perform on the day. There were also signs of ill-discipline as three of their forwards were sent to the sin bin allowing the French side inflict maximum damage when they were down a man. Cian Healy, Devin Toner and Tom Denton received the yellow cards as the game finished 24-9 at Stade Felix Mayol.

They trailed 10-9 at the half with Johnny Sexton kicking three penalties from three in the opening 40. A try from Steffon Armitage, a conversion and a penalty from Eric Escande would be enough to see Toulon lead by the minimum going in at the half.

A missed Johnny Sexton penalty and a Devin Toner yellow card left Leinster facing an uphill battle as Escande kicked two more penalties to leave the Irish side trailing by 10 with Toner returning to the field.

Tom Denton was the last to head for the sin bin as Steffon Armitage scored another try to end the scoring as he dived over the line injury time.

While Leinster hung in for as long as they could, they failed to score for the last 55 minutes of the game and now face an almost impossible task to make it to the knockout stages of the Champions Cup.
