Luke Fitzgerald's out of the Six Nations but Schmidt won't replace him just yet

Joe Schmidt will not call up a replacement for Luke Fitzgerald after the player was ruled out of all of this year's Six Nations.

The IRFU have confirmed that the luckless Leinster star suffered a medial ligament strain in training last week that will force him out of Ireland's title defence.

He will be out of action for six to eight weeks.

Head coach Joe Schmidt won't call-up a replacement ahead of this week's game against Wales.

Team manager Mick Kearney explained what caused the injury.

"Just doing a tackling drill at the Aviva on Friday, the open session, and his foot just got caught in the grass and twisted his knee. So fairly innocuous but it's obviously very unfortunate and very unlucky to be out of the Six Nations," he said, before adding that a replacement call-up is unlikely before this week and that Ireland "will have to manage with what we have".
