Luke McGrath hoping to be in contention for Bilbao final

Ireland and Leinster scrum half Luke McGrath is hoping to be fit for Leinster’s Champions Cup Final date with Racing Metro next Month.

The Leinster player’s injured ankle is on the mend, and he has just had a protective boot removed, paving the way for a return next week.

UCD's McGrath confirmed he will not be fit in time for Leinster’s Pro 14 trip to the Sports Grounds against Connacht, but is confident of winning the race to be fit for the Bilbao showdown.

McGrath man spoke with OTB’s Will O’Callaghan at the launch Ulster Bank League Awards.

“The last couple of days, especially, have been pretty good. I’ve been happy, and it shouldn’t be too much longer,’ said McGrath.

He says it has been a frustrating couple of months after sustain knee, and then the ankle injury in quick succession that ruled him out of Leinster’s semi-final victory over Scarlets. The Ireland international say he’s excited with the prospect of returning.

“It’s been a stop-start last two or three months. One with the knee, and now with the ankle, but progressing really well the last two or three days its come on leaps and bounds. So, it shouldn’t be too much longer. I’m very excited to get back. It’s not been easy been out for quite a while.”

The 25-year-old is excited about Ireland’s tour of Australia this summer but says his sole focus is on returning for his province’s crucial end of season run-in.

“I need to narrow the focus now, because I’ve been injured for so long. I just need to focus about getting back on the pitch with Leinster, and if that comes it comes, and that would be amazing. We will take it one step at a time.”
