Minister for Sport reiterates the Government's commitment to World Cup bid

The bid team to bring the 2023 Rugby World Cup to Ireland are continuing to work behind the scenes as the Minister for Sport today reiterated the Government's commitment to the big.

Pascal Donohoe was speaking to Newstalk Breakfast this morning when he was asked how the bid was progressing. "We believe because of out time zone benefits, because of the very high level of air access that Ireland has and because of the very high quality of our existing stadium and sporting infrastructure that we will be able to put in a very strong bid.

World Cup games have been held in the old Lansdowne Road, Ravenhill and Thomond Park in 1991 and 1999 but have never been the sole hosts of the event. Minister Donohoe told Newstalk Breakfast that he hopes the cross-border initiative with the Northern Ireland executive will help the bid.

France, Italy and South Africa have also confirmed their interest in hosting the tournament. The winning bid will not be announced until the middle of 2017.
