Paul O'Connell's mother wins newspaper competition... to see her son play against France

Paul O'Connell's mother has won a newspaper competition - to see her son play in Ireland's crunch game against France.

She was randomly selected as winner from thousands of entries to a competition in the Irish Examiner.

When the newspaper contacted her to check if she was free to travel, Shelagh O’Connell said yes - but asked "is it OK if I am Paul O’Connell’s mother?"

She told the paper that "match tickets are not the problem. It’s the flights and actually getting there. For the last game, when Ireland played Canada in Cardiff, we had to fly into London, followed by a four-hour drive to Cardiff. I wasn’t the best after sitting in the car for four hours".

She added she is looking forward to flying straight to Cardiff as part of the prize.

Ireland take on France on Sunday October 11th, in their final pool game of the Rugby World Cup. Irish captain O'Connell starts on the bench for tomorrow's game against Romania.
