Players have the chance to impress against the Chiefs, says Gatland

British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland says players can stake a claim for Test selection against New Zealand when they face the Chiefs this morning.

It's just four days until the opening match against the All Blacks.

But despite a tight turnaround for players featuring in Hamilton today, Gatland says there's a chance for fringe members of the team to push for a place in the 23.

"We're still not confirmed in terms of the number of the combinations," he said. "Finalising what we want in the second row and in the back row.

"The back three combination and the midfield will need to be looked at as well, so there's a great opportunity for players to be playing for spots."

Ireland skipper Rory Best captains a Lions team looking to make it four wins from six tour matches. Robbie Henshaw, Iain Henderson and Jared Payne all make the starting line-up on Tuesday morning.

Six of the Lions substitutes were only called up at the weekend. Best says other than that, they're a well-gelled team.

"You look at the XV that are starting and realise that we've been together and played together, buy and large, for a couple of games now," he said.

"There should be no excuses for our performance. We need to take the pressure off the guys on the bench by getting them up to speed so that they can have an impact when they come on."
