Keith Wood: 'Playing for your country is a really, really big deal'

Munster's Player of the Year CJ Stander has suggested that he intends to declare for Ireland at international level.

While World Rugby is set to review the eligibility rules in the future, the South African can qualify on residency grounds.

With potential changes afoot, Keith Wood and The Irish Times' Gerry Thornley discussed the issue on Off The Ball tonight.

"When you look at some of the French teams that have academies in Fiji and you say 'why are they doing that?' because they can pretty much naturalise players and bring them over a period of time. They're there for three years and then they can play for France. Now France has got a huge factory of rugby players coming through their own system and yet they have that idea," said Keith, who described it as a "professional club attitude".

"We do it and you can see it with CJ and the rules are the rules, so we play by the rules and that's what we should do. Playing for your country is a really, really big deal."

Gerry also spoke about the argument within the nuance of a globalised world, but also feels the rule should apply after five years of residency.

"Five years is a real commitment," he said.

Gerry and Keith also gave their take on the Pro 12 clash between Ulster and Munster as both vie for a home semi-final in the playoffs.
