Richie McCaw will miss out on the oppourtunity of appearing in a record 23 Rugby World Cup games will have to wait after the New Zealand captain wasn't named in the All-Blacks clash with Tonga on Friday.
The 34-year-old has already accrued an impressive 19 appearances in the tournament and was aiming to overtake the mark set by England’s Jason Leonard, who holds the record on 22.
McCaw, who is missing out due t a hip injury, ill be replaced Sam Cane who starts at openside, with the best he can hope for now is a record-equaling 22 should he return for their quarter final draw with either Ireland or France.
The only way he would have surpassed the mark was if he had played in every game as far as the World Cup final, assuming the reigning world champions would make it that far.
Kieran Read will wear the captains armband, while centre Ma’a Nonu will make his 100th Test appearance.
Kick-off in Newcastle on Friday is 8pm.
