RG Snyman begins rehab after "successful surgery" on knee

Munster second row RG Snyman has started back into his rehab programme, after the province confirmed he had "successful" surgery on his knee last week.

Snyman's setback in his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament tear last August had thus far been going smoothly, and he had reportedly been on course to return to competitive action this month.

However, after experiencing pain in his knee last week, the 26-year-old was forced to undergo a "minor procedure" on what the province describe as an "unrelated knee injury".

This afternoon, Munster said Snyman came through the surgery without any complications, as well as confirming an otherwise clean bill of health ahead of this Friday's Rainbow Cup meeting with Connacht.

"There are no fresh injuries to report following Friday’s 38-10 victory over Ulster.

"RG Snyman underwent successful surgery last week and has resumed his rehabilitation," their statement said.

Snyman played just seven minutes of his debut last August versus Leinster, before landing badly at a lineout and suffering what now looks like being a season-ending knee injury.

The South African World Cup winner seems unlikely to feature for Munster in the Rainbow Cup, with South Africa's summer tests against Georgia and the British and Irish Lions now looking like the only opportunities for him to get game time before the start of next season.

Speaking last week, Munster's defence coach JP Ferreira says Snyman had been making great progress up until the recent setback.

“He was training and rehabilitating, he has done a couple of things with me defensively and then also some agility stuff.

“He was literally just running and he felt something in the knee that wasn't right and then stopped. The doctors assessed him and took him to the specialist.

“That's where we are at with him now. It's not great news, but he has got a strong will and a strong mind, so it's just something that has come along in his path. Hopefully he can get rid of it as soon as possible," he said of RG Snyman.
