'One of my proudest moments in rugby ... and I seem to be saying sorry for it'

Ryan Crotty, the All Black who broke Ireland's hearts with a last-minute try to deny Joe Schmidt's side victory at Lansdowne Road in 2013, says he now finally understands the "magnitude" of his touchdown and has apologised for his actions.

The Crusaders captain admits he only learned of its significance - Ireland have never beaten the world champions in a competitive game - from meeting Irish ex-pats in the club's city, Christchurch.

"I've kind of come to understand the magnitude of it since then from meeting a lot of Irish people in Christchurch, that it seems I have to apologise to, which is quite weird," Crotty told Newstalk's Richie McCormack.

"One of my proudest moments in rugby, and I seem to be saying sorry for it a wee bit. I've come to understand it and I am sorry."

Crotty will feature in a new AIG television advertisement which will be rotated heavily in Ireland over the next few months, before thoughts turn almost exclusively to the matter of defending the All Blacks' World Cup title in England come September.

New Zealand won't face a side from the Six Nations until the second round of the World Cup at the earliest, but Crotty insists "guys will tune into it".

Crotty, a 14-cap All Black, has been involved with the iconic team for more than two years now and admits it was a "daunting" environment to break into and reflected on his time in the camp.

He says it's "hard to say" if coming to the Northern hemisphere will be detrimental to New Zealand's chances, but insists it shouldn't be "too much of an issue".
