The Rugby World Cup so far in numbers

The Pool stages are over and 40 games have been completed in the Rugby World Cup with just eight games to go. Lets have a look at some of the main numbers from the tournament so far ahead of the knockout stages.

1,881,023 fans attended matches in the stadia around England and Cardiff in the Pool stages. The Rugby World Cup organisers took a risk by bringing games to footballing heartlands and would have been pleasantly surprised by the attendances in football stadiums. St James' Park and Villa Park were among the Premier League grounds to host matches, and have helped the organisers reach almost 2,000,000 fans in the Pool stages alone.

2,020 points have been scored so far in the tournament over the opening stages. Surprisingly, Argentina have scored the most points so far. They scored 179 points in the for games. Their South American rivals Uruguay have scored the fewest. Their two tries against Fiji helped Los Teros score 30 points in four games.

231 tries have been scored so far. New Zealand have crossed the try line 25 time times. Their winger Julian Savea joins South Africa's Bryan Habana at the top of the try scoring charts. Both men have five tries so far.

340 placed kicks have been scored so far in the Pool stages. 164 of those were conversions with 176 coming from penalties.

Only three drop goals have been converted so far. Handre Polland, Nicolas Sanchez and Owen Farrell are the player to have scored them. Surely we can expect that number to increase massively in the knock out stages?

Uruguay's Agustin Ormaechea is the one player to be sent off so far. He was given his marching orders against Fiji. He was originally named man of the match in that game before having the result overturned.

Scotland's Greig Laidlaw is the top scorer of the Rugby World Cup so far having scored 60 points. In the pool stages he scored one try, 11 penalties and 11 conversions.

David Pocock has been one of the tournament's stars so far. The Australian flanker turned number 8 has caused ten turnovers. Unsurprisingly, that's more than any other player.
