Trevor Hogan: "Rugby's not like soccer" amid Irish playing style concern

Ireland's World Cup exit and winless start to the Six Nations so far have led to suggestions that Joe Schmidt may have to alter the style of play.

Ex-Ireland second row Trevor Hogan and former Leicester and Munster back Johne Murphy joined us on Off The Ball tonight to reflect on the narrow defeat to France.

With question marks over the style of play of late, Trevor gave his take on whether it is possible to evolve things quickly, emphasising that some of the reaction has been "over the top".

"I think it's about being measured, about being calm and we have to get as many bodies back as possible and try to go over to Twickenham which is going to be an even bigger challenge," he said, also highlighting how weather conditions adversely affected the way Ireland wanted to play the game.

"Rugby's not like soccer where you can stick to a certain type of play for every match generally. You can play a certain way in soccer and maybe even in other sports. But rugby is very much dictated by the opposition and hugely by the conditions.

"Rugby is a game that has many different facets and you have to be able to adapt and use both. Now, there definitely is a Southern Hemisphere style that they will recognise when it's on, a little bit better than the Northern Hemisphere teams have done."
