Sanita Puspure wins European Gold in Lucerne

Ireland's Sanita Puspure secured gold in this morning sculls event at the European Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The Latvian born rower set a new European record in the process with a time of 7:23.18.

Puspure's dominant victory from lane-3 saw her finish 86 seconds ahead of last year's winner Jeannine Gmelin to take the spoils. The Swiss rower finished in second place with Miroslava Topinková Knapková of the Czech Republic in bronze medal position.

There was plenty of Irish interest in other races at the championships with Skibbereen twins Fintan and Jake McCarthy finishing in 5th place in the men's lightweight double sculls.

Philip Doyle and Ronan Byrne placed fourth in the 'B' Final of the men's double sculls. The pair finished in 10th place overall.

While Denise Walsh and Lydia Heaphy had a sixth-place finish in the lightweight double 'B' Final.
