'You don't want the perception that you're a cheat'

For the second year in a row, Limerick are in an All Ireland semi-final and Shane Dowling has played a key role in that success.

The 21-year-old helped himself to 2-08 against Wexford in yesterday's quarter-final and tonight he told Off The Ball that Limerick will hope to overturn Kilkenny in the last-four.

"We're back where we left off and obviously it's going to be very difficult to beat Kilkenny, who have been the kingpins as long as I can remember. We'll give it a shot anyway and hopefully things will go our way the next day," he said.

After the match, Dowling made a point of sharing his concern about his second goal which came off his hand before finding the net - a goal which turned out to be legitimate in any case.

"I inquired about it to the county secretary at half-time. You don't want the perception of you going around the country that you're a cheat and that you're celebrating something that was unfair or shouldn't have been allowed," said Dowling who explained how the goal came about.

The Na Piarsaigh also highlighted the nature of criticism that players have to deal with.

"It's one thing people giving an opinion, it's another thing people going over the top. I think people out there are aware now that players are only human and only there to do their best. They're not getting paid for it. That was something that annoyed me earlier on in the year. Maybe as I get older and wiser, it might not bother me as much," he said.

Dowling also chatted about taking his skills to the golf course but also explained about the healthy relationship between the panel and manager TJ Ryan.
