LISTEN: Can football's billionaire boys' club ever be broken up?

This week on Team 33, we spoke to Soccernomics author and Financial Times writer Simon Kuper about the growing inequality in European football.

While the last few seasons in the Champions League have seen the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid reach finals, football has also had to watch the rise of clubs like Chelsea whose success has been under-pinned by funding from a wealthy billionaire.

Alongside the nouveau-riche, the previous elite continue to get richer and richer, with clubs like Ajax left behind and unable to compete at the highest level.

So we had a fair few questions for Simon with an eye towards the future:

Will we ever see a club like Ajax compete at the highest level again with a self-produced ?

Has Financial Fair Play had any impact on talk of a future European Super League?

Will a landscape dominated by a small group of elite clubs threaten the foundations of the sport?

Is the success of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund the blueprint for clubs just below the elite?

Simon examined all those questions and more, and you can listen to the full interview via this week's Team 33 podcast or download for free via iTunes:
