Martin O'Neill talks Bosnia echoes, Hendrick concern and dealing with Eriksen

On Saturday, Ireland's World Cup playoff first date with destiny against Denmark takes place in Copenhagen with the Boys in Green aiming to get at least one away goal to take back to Dublin and keep things tight at the back.

The Boys in Green have been here before with Euro playoffs, getting positive results away from home against both Estonia and Bosnia for Euro 2012 and 2016 respectively which helped pave the way for qualification.

Speaking at the Ireland press conference today, Martin O'Neill suggested that the Irish approach in Copenhagen will not be dissimilar to the trip to Bosnia this time two years ago.

"It will be a similar approach to the game in Bosnia, desperately trying to get something out of the game, keep the tie alive - most important thing - and try to make it all to play for in Dublin," said the Ireland manager.

There are a few injury concerns with Jeff Hendrick picking up a knock on club duty for Burnley against Southampton on Saturday, with the midfielder withdrawn on 65 minutes.

"Jeff came off after 60 odd minutes in the game. He was having a bit off a problem and he's still a little bit sore at the moment, so we'll see how he is in the next couple of days and he's still hopeful and I think it's a case of the other players just being nursed through the next couple of days as well too," said O'Neill, but added that the player himself "said he was improving".

He also touched on Denmark talisman Christian Eriksen and the challenge of dealing with the in-form Tottenham attacking midfielder who has to be given "the respect he deserves".

"I think no matter who goes in to play midfield, I think it'll be a really big evening for us," he said, adding that Eriksen can "elude tackles, manoeuvre the ball and is playing exceptionally well".

"Players have shown in the past they're up for these particular evenings. We had a really tough game against Wales and we've had tough matches right through and I think the players have to get into a strong mentality for a start. And to know that it's everything in these two matches. World Cup places at stake, it couldn't be higher."
