Adam Idah: 'It was a top performance from everyone - we were unlucky'

Adam Idah believes the Republic of Ireland were "unlucky" to only come away from Saturday's game against Azerbaijan with a 1-1 draw.

After falling behind with the last kick of the first-half, Ireland spent most of the second-half trying to work their way through a stubborn Azerbaijan defence.

While defender Shane Duffy eventually made the breakthrough and levelled things up for Ireland, that would be the only goal for Stephen Kenny's team.

"It is disappointing," man of the match Adam Idah told RTÉ Sport in the direct aftermath of the match.

"We came out in the second-half and played well. It was a top performance from everyone and I think we were so unlucky not to get another goal.

"I think we deserved to win that game and it is heartbreaking for us."

Four World Cup qualifiers without a win, the 1-1 draw does get Ireland their first point of a campaign that is now all but doomed.

Due to play Serbia in Dublin on Tuesday evening, Adam Idah does believe that there is work to be done and that Ireland have the players to do it.

"At times, we need to be a bit sharper in the final third," the Norwich City striker confirmed. "On my own behalf, I think I need to be more clinical.

"We did very well in the second-half and I think all we can do is build on that and take it into the next few games."

Commenting on the make-up of Ireland's young attacking trio - Idah, Aaron Connolly & Troy Parrott - he is similarly confident that they have what it takes to be successful.

"We've all grown up together from the underage and understand each other," he commented, "on and off the pitch.

"We didn't score tonight, but we're still young, still learning and I'm sure there's more to come from us all."
