Alex Ferguson: Europa League win imperative for Manchester United's Champions League hopes

Manchester United currently lie in fifth place in the Premier League.

Four points behind Liverpool, with two games in hand, fourth place, and the Champions League certainly seem within reach for Jose Mourinho's side.

Despite their league position, former manager Alex Ferguson feels the best chance the team have of playing in the Champions League next season, if by winning the Europa League in May.

The Old Trafford side are favourites to win the tournament for the first time in their history. Drawn against Belgian giants Anderlecht in the quarter-finals, United are only five games away from winning the title.

In an interview with American radio station SiriusXM, Ferguson is reported to have put United's best chance in a Stockholm final in two months time.

"At the moment the Premier League is a real fight for the positions behind Chelsea with Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, ourselves. It’s not going to be easy to get into the top four."

"They could do it but I look on the Europa League as a great chance. First of all, the club has never won the Europa League. It adds to the CV so I think we’ve got a good opportunity."

United have 11 games left this season buy have a very tough run-in. They must face Everton and Chelsea at home and Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal away.
