Arsenal retain the FA Cup

Arsenal retained the FA Cup this evening with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.

The result cements Arsenal's cup history. The win was their twelfth and they now move one ahead of Manchester United on the all time list. Arsene Wenger also enters the history books with a sixth FA Cup win as a manager.

For Aston Villa, their wait for the FA Cup goes on for another year. The Birmingham side last won the FA Cup in 1957 and today marks their second time to lose the final since that win 48 years ago.

Arsenal were full value for the win, and only for the heroics of Shay Given, were unlucky to be leading only 1-0 at half time. Theo Walcott scored for Arsenal just before half time and after that goal, Arsene Wenger's side took control of the game.

Alexis Sanchez rounded off his excellent first season in England with a goal just after half time, before captain Per Mertesacker headed home just after the hour mark to ensure Arsenal retained the title.

The sides finished 37 points apart at the end of the Premier League season, and that gulf showed especially in the second half, when Arsenal were comfortably able to control Villa's advances.

The heartbreak for Aston Villa was completed when substitute Olivier Giroud scored with the last kick of the game in added time.

It is the biggest win in an FA Cup final since 1994, when Manchester United defeated Chelsea 4-0 in Wembley.

Arsenal's win ensures that Southampton play in next seasons Europa League.
