"Arsene Wenger knew he'd made a big mistake" - Philippe Auclair on Arsenal's European woes

After Arsenal's dismal performance yesterday in the Champions League, Philippe Auclair joined Ger, Joe and Emmet Malone on Wednesday's night Football Show to dissect just what went wrong.

The London side were condemned to a 3-2 defeat at home to Olympiacos, a team that by most people's estimations, they should have beaten to give them any sort of hope at progressing through the group stage.

The stakes were considerably higher when you factor in an opening game defeat away to Dinamo Zagreb, a team that Bayern Munich managed to put five past last night.

Auclair acknowledged that it was likely a miscalculation that caused Wenger to start with David Ospina ahead of number one, Petr Cech.

"He knew he'd made a big mistake" he said, "He'd made a big call which turned into a mistake and meant that after the game [in the post match press conference] he was extremely tetchy.

"[His attitude] was on the verge of being quite disrespectful to journalists who are just asking questions that everyone else - the fans, the neutrals - was asking."

The Gunners face an uphill battle now to reach the knockout stages, they'll need an unlikely victory against German champions Bayern Munich who show no signs of slowing down in Europe or in the Bundesliga.

"He made a very big call, maybe due to the fact that Arsenal come up against Manchester Unite this weekend" he said in an attempt to explain Arsene's choice of rearguard.

"I mean, it wasn't just Petr Cech who was rested. Nacho Monreal and Aaron Ramsey both could have started, but the decision to rest Cech is incomprehensible."
