Barnsley fans create a petition wanting it made illegal for club to sell Cork's Conor Hourihane

Conor Hourihane has been one of the stars in The Championship this season.

The Barnsley captain and Cork native has been instrumental this season, as his team look to get into the play-off spots. Barnsley are currently in eighth place, four points outside the top-six.

Hourihane has had 11 assists in The Championship this season (four more than any other player), scoring an additional five goals. Despite his attacking flair, the midfielder has made 76 tackles this season. Only one player has made more.

The 25-year-old, former Ireland Under-21 international is one of the most wanted players in the division. Clubs from both the Premier League and Championship are monitoring his progress, with a potential move this month in the offing.

Such is Hourihane's importance to the team, some Barnsley fans have created an online petition calling on the British government to make it illegal for the club to sell the Cork star.

"Numerous bids have been rumoured to be thrown about for Barnsley's star man and captain fantastic Conor Hourihane", the petition claims. "We CAN NOT allow this to happen! This petition calls on HM government to make it ILLEGAL for Barnsley FC to sell Conor Hourihane to any other football club for any fee."

Hourihane's future remains unknown, but you can see the petition here.
