Bayern Munich pass on Arsene Wenger becoming their new boss

Arsene Wenger won't be the new manager at Bayern Munich.

The former Arsenal head coach was openly interested in succeeding Nico Kovac at the Allianz Arena.

However, Bild journalist Christian Falk says Wenger spoke with Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge yesterday but the Frenchman will not be taking over in Bavaria.

Such was his interest that Wenger contacted Rummenigge himself, stating his interest in the vacancy.

The club told Bild that "Bayern appreciate Arsene Wenger very much for his work as a coach at Arsenal London, but he is no option as a coach at FC Bayern Munich".

Bayern sacked Kovac following their embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Wenger had made no secret of his desire to return to management this week, and when pressed on the Bayern issue by beIN Sports, the 70-year old said, "Of course! Coaching was my whole life until now and everybody who has coached will tell you the same.

"You miss the intensity. There’s some things you miss a lot, and some things you don’t miss. So I enjoyed as well things I don’t miss too much.

"But on the other hand, winning football games, preparing a team for a game, developing players and getting satisfaction and shared emotions is something that you miss.

"So of course yes, I was responsible at 33 years of age and coached until 69 without interruption at top level. So that is 36 years without stopping.

"So on the other hand, even if I miss it, to get a little bit out of that pressure for a year was not too bad for me – people who know me well say I’m more relaxed, it’s true!"

Hansi Flick is in temporary charge of Bayern, and guided them to a 2-0 win at home to Olympiakos on Wednesday night that secured their qualification for the Champions League last-16 with two games to spare.

Bayern may opt to keep Flick at the helm until the end of the season, as two of their primary targets - Erik ten Hag (under contact to Ajax until 2022) and Thomas Tuchel (under contract at Paris Saint Germain until 2021) would prove too difficult to acquire at this stage of the season.
