UEFA approves goal-line technology for Euro 2016

UEFA today announced it will use goal-line technology at this year's European Championship and in the Champions League from next season.

The executive committee approved giving referees more technical help at its top competitions.

FIFA used the GoalControl system at the 2014 World Cup, while German company and Britain's Hawk-Eye system are widely used in European leagues.

There had been previous controversy surrounding the use of goal-line technology at major championships. Match officials did not award co-host Ukraine a goal when the ball crossed the line in a 1-0 loss against England at Euro 2012.

Acting head of European football Gianni Infantino said: "We looked at it seriously…and finally we decided to start with Euro (2016) and then move on to the Champions League.

“Now we are going to look at how to implement it,” he added.
