'Bruno Fernandes is not driving force at Manchester United' | John Giles

John Giles believes that Bruno Fernandes has not been the 'driving force' behind Manchester United's resurgence.

Giles spoke to The Football Show in the aftermath of the Manchester derby, where Fernandes has been credited as helping United.

"He is an improvement. I think he is doing well but I don't think that he has been the driving force in what they have done.

"It happens when somebody new comes in and they win matches, they get great credit. I wouldn't put it down to his signing that they have done well in recent weeks. I think that he has contributed to it, honestly.

"People keep saying it looks like Scholes playing, but I don't see him as a midfield player at all. He is a goalscoring player coming from midfield.

"I don't want to be too hard on him, but in the match against Everton last week he was good in the first half when they were on top but in the second half, you couldn't see him.

"Even last week in the Manchester derby, when it was United on top it was fine but when it was City, he wasn't to be seen.

"He is not going to influence the game, he is going to be a goalscoring midfield player. There is no harm in having one of those but I don't think that he is the influence in the team that people say."

Fernandes at United

As to where Manchester United have improved, if not with Fernandes, then what was the cause?

"They have played better - and I'm not trying to be clever!

"They are capable of winning matches. We are setting the bar really low here because we are saying that they can qualify because Manchester City are banned.

"This is Manchester United - you expect them to be up there challenging.

"They should be where they are at the moment. In my opinion, you wanted Manchester United to be doing better than that."
