Tristan Ivanov, one of the most iconic stars from the 1994 World Cup, has died aged 50.

The Bulgarian defender was one of the stars of the team that reached the World Cup semi-finals in America. He also captained his country four years later at France 98 and played at Euro 96.

Ivanov played 76 times for his country scoring six goals including one against Wales in a Euro 96 qualifier.

The former Rapid Vienna and CSKA Sofia defender died after suffering his second heart attack in the past six months according to reports in Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian Football Union paid tribute to the defender this morning. "Before being a great player Trifon was a great man. With great heart and always ready to help. We all mourn the loss of a true friend. Rest in peace, Trifon!"
