Robinson: 'We're going home with a big 'W' - that's the main thing'

Republic of Ireland's Callum Robinson spoke to the media following his two-goal salvo in a 3-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Baku.

After spending much of the week being talked about for his decision not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the West Bromwich Albion forward was crucial to Ireland's win on Saturday evening.

Two well taken first-half goals gave Ireland a cushion that they took into the second-half before substitute Chiedozie Ogbene added a third late on with a header.

Speaking after the match in Baku, Callum Robinson shared his thoughts following what has been an unusual week for him personally.

"Happy first of all to get the win," he said in conversation with RTÉ post-match, "that's the main thing - goals come second, but it was obviously nice to get on the scoresheet as well.

"The main thing is that we're on the plane on the way home with a big 'W'.

Robinson was the source of much attention after he publicly voiced his decision not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

"My honest opinion would be it's your choice," he explained earlier this week. "I wouldn't be, to say 'everyone should be vaccinated' or 'you shouldn't get vaccinated'.

"I think it's your personal choice. If you want to be vaccinated, then go do it. But if you don't want to - it is what it is - it's everyone's choice, I can't tell people to get it and I can't tell people not to.

"I haven't been vaccinated yet, no, so that's my choice at this moment in time."

However, there was no talk of that when he spoke with RTÉ following Saturday's win.

"As I've said in interviews before," he stated when asked about his role in Kenny's team tonight, "when people ask me my best position in the front line, I enjoy being a free spirit at most.

"I enjoy getting on the ball, just being a threat and trying to score and assist... I'm lucky enough that the gaffer sort of gave me half that license today to do that in the game and be a free spirit."

While the result will be of huge relief to manager Stephen Kenny, Callum Robinson insisted that it will be a massive source of belief and confidence to the squad as a whole.
