Can Chicago Fire win the World Cup?

Bastian Schweinsteiger's move to Chicago Fire was confirmed earlier this month.

The German international has signed a one-year deal, but has the option to sign for an additional year. One of Schweinsteiger's main selling points to the American media on his transfer was the fact he was a reigning World Cup winner.

Despite entering the final stages of his career, the German is only the second player in the history of MLS to join a side as a reigning World Cup winner. In 1997, Brazilian defender Branco joined the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, three years after winning the World Cup in 1994.

While football is continuing to increase in popularity in America, there is still many blind spots for those who cover the game, even casually.

On Wednesday, Schweinsteiger was introduced to the Chicago press for the first time, and was asked if he felt he could win another World Cup.

On Wednesday, Schweinsteiger was introduced to the Chicago press for the first time, and was asked if he felt he could win another World Cup.

"With your addition to this team, is it a fair expectation to see a clear pathway towards a World Cup competition, come out of Chicago?", a reporter asked the German.

A clearly confused Schweinsteiger struggled to understand the question, before the reporter doubled-down and made sure he was crystal clear in Chicago Fire's hopes of winning the World Cup.

"Let me re-phrase. Do you expect now that you're here Bastian, that a World Cup goal for Chicago Fire is a realistic expectation?"

The club's General Manager Nelson Rodriguez, jumped in to save Schweinsteiger and said that the team were going to focus on winning the MLS Cup.

With just over 14 months until the World Cup begins, Chicago Fire can be seen as one of the outsiders for the title.
