'I can't see him leaving Wolves' | Elliott on Matt Doherty's options

A move to a ‘bigger’ club would not necessarily be the right course of action for Matt Doherty, according to Stephen Elliott.

The former Republic of Ireland striker was speaking on OTB's Football Saturday and discussed Doherty’s career.

Doherty has been with Wolves since 2010 and has played an essential role for the club in their impressive last couple of seasons.

The team currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League table and Elliott was unconvinced that a move to a historically more successful club would be the right career choice for his fellow Irishman.

“It’s a weird question to say a bigger move. What age is Doherty? 28 now? Like you say, Wolves are on the up now.

“Look at the way Wolves play. Bar Liverpool or Man City obviously they’re as good as any team in the league and they’ve got money behind them as well,” Elliott said.

Wolves are well within reach of a Champions League spot in the Premier League table, with Manchester City’s two-year ban meaning that they only have to finish in the top five.

They are also into the last-16 of the Europa League and face Olympiacos next in Europe’s second-tier competition.

“They’re playing European football now. They could go on and win the Europa League. They’re playing really high-level football. Maybe he’s just found his home.

“He’s been there for a long time. If I’m Matt Doherty unless a ridiculous offer financially comes in, I can’t see him wanting to move away from Wolverhampton,” Elliott commented.

Wolves were unable to secure a win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday, being held to a 0-0 draw.

However, their next three games are against Premier League strugglers West Ham, Bournemouth and Aston Villa, where Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will hope to pick up maximum points.
