Carlo Ancelotti: Sergio Ramos could easily have been a forward

Few defenders find themselves in the positions that Sergio Ramos does in the opposition half and fewer again know what to do when they get there.

The Spaniard in recent years has added goals to his repertoire of skills, none more important than his last minute equaliser against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final. The goal forced extra-time and Real went on to win the game 4-1 thanks to goals from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last year, Zinedine Zidane delivered Madrid their second European crown in three years and in doing so brought their in the club's history and Ramos once again found himself on the scoresheet, scoring the opening goal of the game.

During his successful period with the club, the Ancelotti worked with attacking players the calibre of Bale, Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and French striker, Karim Benzema.  Despite this, the Italian reckons Ramos would have excelled in an attacking role.

"He continues to score miraculous goals," Ancelotti told AS Diario. "He does it because he has quality in front of goal

"In fact, he could easily have been a forward. I sometimes joked with him, telling him I was going to pick him at centre-forward.

"That personality and character that he has are really important to teams."

Of late, Ramos has scored against Barcelona during the first Clasico of the season and most recently scored a late winner against Deportivo La Coruña.

With regards to their victory in 2014 Champions League final, the now-Bayern Munich manager admits: "I think that final was my best moment at Real Madrid. We won the most important trophy that we'd set ourselves as an objective.

"We'd done really well until December, then we had problems with injured players, but fortunately we were able to lift the Champions League."
