Footballer Ched Evans has told a jury he was juvenile and childish when he decided to check on a friend and "a bird" at a hotel room at 4am.
But the former Manchester City footballer has told a court he didn't rape the teenager.
Evans, 27, is accused of having sex with the 19-year-old when she was too intoxicated to consent in North Wales in May 2011.
Cardiff Crown Court heard, following a night out with friends, that the 13-cap Wales international arrived at a Premier Inn near Rhyl in the early hours of the morning after receiving a text from his friend Clayton McDonald that he had "got a bird".
The striker said he then got a key-card from reception before opening the door to the room where he saw his footballing friend Mr McDonald and a woman naked together.
He told the jury: "I did not know for sure what was happening in the room (before I entered). I thought they might be having sex. I couldn't be sure, but like I said I was being childish."
Evans said that Mr McDonald asked the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons: "Can my mate join in?"
The footballer claimed: "She looked at me and said 'yes'.
He said he then went on to have sex with the woman but stopped after Mr McDonald left the room because he became aware that he was "cheating on my girlfriend".
Consent
Evans confirmed he then left via a fire escape and walked to his family home in the town with Mr McDonald.
His defence barrister, Judy Khan QC, asked Evans: "During sex with the woman, was she consenting?" He replied: "Yes."
Ms Khan asked: "If she had appeared too drunk to consent, would you have had sex with her?" Evans said: "No."
Finally, she asked: "Did you rape her, Mr Evans?" To which Evans replied: "No."
The prosecutor, Simon Medland QC, questioned Evans' version of events and highlighted CCTV which Mr Medland argued shows the woman was very drunk. He said the CCTV shows her falling in a shop and "wobbling" in the street.
Mr Medland asked Evans: "Do you maintain by the time she got to that hotel room that she was not very drunk and was in control?"
Evans said: "Yeah, I said she was about the same as me. I was drunk but I was in control."
Mr Medland continued: "I suggest to you, Mr Evans, that cannot possibly be the truth," before suggesting that the footballer had "sinister" motives for leaving via the fire escape in order to cover his tracks.
Evans denies one count of rape and the case continues.
