Chelsea considering leaving Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis

Premier League champions Chelsea may be forced to leave their Stamford Bridge home temporarily, as their quest to play in a bigger stadium continues.

The stadium, which has been home to Chelsea since its foundation in 1905, currently has a capacity of just under 42,000 making it smaller than seven Premier League stadia.

The club are currently considering an option to expand the capacity to 60,000, which would take three years to complete. The team could continue to play at the ground, but it would mean playing on front of a greatly reduced capacity.

According to The Telegraph, one option that is being considered is renting Twickenham for the duration of the rebuild of Stamford Bridge. The RFU headquarters currently holds 82,000 and lies lest than 10 miles west of Chelsea's home.

The stadium is set to the the centrepiece to the Rugby World Cup, which takes place this Autumn. The opening match, the semi finals and the final are set to take place at the iconic venue.
