‘Confidence is low’ | Cork City boss Neale Fenn on his side’s struggles

Cork City manager Neale Fenn was on Wednesday’s OTB AM and spoke about trying to change his side’s fortunes after a disappointing season so far.

Fenn left his role with Longford Town and took over as Cork manager in August after the departure of former coach John Caulfield.

The Englishman has suffered defeat in all three of his games in charge of Cork and admitted that turning their season around will be no easy task.

“As they say, winning is a habit and so is losing. So there’s no memory of once you go in front to go and win the game and drive on and keep doing well.

“They have been getting a little bit of stick from people around the place. Confidence is low so we’re just trying to build that up again,” Fenn said.

Cork have only managed seven wins in the Premier Division this season, which is massively disappointing compared to previous years.

The Rebel Army were runners up in 2018 and won the league in 2017 and Fenn has been unable to figure out exactly what has gone wrong with the side.

“The drop-off this year has been staggering really. No one can quite put their finger on it. It is a little bit of a rebuild for next season.

“It’s about getting in the nous, seeing who we want to keep. Who we can let go, who we want to bring up from the underage and try to get the recruitment right for next season.”

“From what I’ve seen, there’s good players there. It’s just trying to put my ideas across and try to get what I want out of the team and try to gel it all together, until the end of the season at least,” Fenn explained.

Cork are currently in eighth place in the Premier Division and with only six games remaining it’s too late for Fenn’s side to make a push for the Europa League qualifying spots.

Nevertheless, the Londoner will hope to get a few positive results as he looks to build towards the next season.
