Could Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny be a future Ireland manager?

Former Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan believes the fact that Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny manages in the League of Ireland should not lead to him being overlooked if the Republic of Ireland job were to become available at some point in the future.

Kenny is on course to retaining the domestic league this season with Dundalk, having already led Bohemians to glory in 2003.

Speaking to Oisin Langan on the Monday Rewind, Paddy was positive about the former Dunfermline boss.

"I think if you're good enough, it doesn't matter whether you manage in the League of Ireland or in the English First Division. If you know how to set up teams, if you know your players, you've got a wonderful chance and Stephen Kenny does an awful lot of homework from what I've seen of the teams he manages," he said, citing Northern Ireland boss and former Shamrock Rovers manager Michael O'Neill as a good example of someone who has gone straight from the League of Ireland to the international scene.

"Stephen Kenny is a very astute football man. There is no question about that and if he got the opportunity to go to England ... I would prefer him to England rather than go to Scotland. I think he might as well stay here than go to Scotland and get into European football and try and win everything on the domestic front here and build up a real, powerful Dundalk team because Dundalk is a wonderful, wonderful footballing town," he said.

Paddy also reviewed the weekend's Premier League action which you can listen to via the podcast:
