Could something special be about to happen with football in Limerick?

Limerick is widely acknowledged as a rugby city and one of the most passionate rugby cities in the World.

Munster reign supreme of the banks of the Shannon, followed by Limerick's inter county teams, but Limerick FC may be gaining a following of their own.

Martin Russell's side travel to Ballybofey on Friday night knowing a draw against Finn Harps will be enough to play Premier Division football next season. While some teams will be annoyed to find themselves in a Promotion-Relegation play off in November, Limerick FC have been delighted with how far they have come.

Until a victory over Sligo Rovers in August, Limerick had failed to win any of their first 21 Premier League games. A 3-2 win over the same side last weekend saw the Markets Field side avoid automatic relegation at the expense of Drogheda United and set up a two legged clash with Finn Harps.

Markets Field only opened midway through the season and an estimated 4,600 packed the ground on Monday night for their 1-0 win over Finn Harps. If Limerick avoid relegation on Friday night, the 2016 season could be a very special one for all fans on Shannonside.
