Cristiano Ronaldo was very close to a return to Manchester United

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Patrice Evra has explained how Alex Ferguson was set to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Ferguson retired following United's successful 2012-13 campaign having secured the Premier League title for a record 20th time. and 13 times with Ferguson at the helm. Ferguson ensured Evra that he would be the manager of the club for a further five years and was planning on rebuilding a Champions League caliber squad with Ronaldo as the focal point.

Evra says, "He even told me: '99 percent, Cristiano Ronaldo will come.' I was like: 'Wow, we are ready to bounce back and to even win the Champions League again.'"

Ferguson, however, decided to call time on his illustrious career with United and any Ronaldo deal became highly unlikely. Ronaldo has intimated that he would like to one day return to Old Trafford, but with Ferguson out of the picture, it became a tougher task for United executives.

Evra goes on to explain just how he felt when Ferguson decided to retire after 27 years at the club to show the effect the Scot had on the United dressing room.

"You know when you are lost and you feel like the world is crumbling? It was a big trauma," he said. "I felt lost."
