'Manchester United is about 50 games a season, not moments' | Damien Delaney on Martial

Once tipped as Old Trafford's next world-beater, Anthony Martial hasn't developed into the player many expected at Manchester United.

Making his United debut aged 19 at Anfield, the then-most expensive teenager in football kickstarted the hype around himself when he collected the ball wide on the left wing before charging into the box, turning Martin Skrtel inside out, and placing it in Liverpool's far corner.

It looked like a Manchester United hero was born that day in 2015, but, nearly five years later, things haven't quite turned out as such.

There have been moments of brilliance, yet the French international has hardly become the feared striker he looked destined to be after that debut.

Now 24, Martial has amassed 18 caps with a return of one goal. His best Premier League goal tally is an uninspiring 11 from the 2015/16 season.

Although United fans remain unusually patient with Martial – and this season could be his best yet (15 goals in all competitions so far) – speaking on Tuesday's Football Show, Damien Delaney dismissed the idea that Martial would ever become the 25-goal a season striker United need.

"He's not as good as everyone says he is," proclaimed the former Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland international.

"He has his moments and he does some great things but he always looks like he has a chip on his shoulder, like he's upset about something. He doesn't do enough for me."

Delaney highlighted his annoyance with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praising Martial's improved running effort earlier this month, arguing that Martial was simply "lazy" before.

That level of energy "should be the minimum. It's non-negotiable," Delaney said.

Despite admitting that Martial's departure could come back to hurt United "because there is a player in there", Delaney argued it doesn't look likely he will cut it at a club of United's standards.

"If he played for Watford you'd go, 'Yeah, he's got moments, he's decent.'

"But for Manchester United, I'm sorry, Manchester United is not about moments. This is, '50 games a season please, and that's why we paid £50 million for you when you were a teenager and an unproven player.'

"He will not turn a corner for Manchester United. It's because he doesn't have that hunger inside of him; you can see the way he walks, the way he carries himself.

"He's not going to show up on a Saturday and frighten the life out of the opposition. He might once a season if the stars and the moon align. He's just not that type of player."
