Borussia Dortmund back Jude Bellingham after he received racial abuse

Borussia Dortmund have released a statement backing their new signing Jude Bellingham after he said that he received racial abuse on social media.

Bellingham's move to Germany was confirmed earlier this week, and the midfielder revealed that he received abusive messages on Twitter.

The offending message said "black people only think about money."

"Times have to change. More has to be done," Bellingham said of the message.

"To not rate me as a player or even dislike me as a person is fine with me. But how someone can use my race and disgraceful stereotypes to criticise a decision I've made for my career is beyond me."

His new club released a statement to back their new signing.

Meanwhile, Bellingham's number 22 shirt at former club Birmingham City has been retired, in an unusual move.

Bellingham made just 41 appearances for the Blues before the news was announced on Thursday.

The England underage international said he couldn't wait to get on the pitch with his new club, where he will wear the same jersey he had at Birmingham.

"I can’t thank Birmingham City enough for what they have done for me – not just this season, but since the age of 7. Of course, I wish everyone associated with the club nothing but the best. Once a blue, always a blue.

"However, I’m incredibly excited to have joined one of the biggest clubs in Europe. The direction they are heading in and how much they help young players improve made it an easy decision for me personally and my family.

"I can’t wait to perform in front of over 80,000 fans when they are back inside one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world – hopefully as soon as possible!"
