Dundalk do the double thanks to Richie Towell

Richie Towell proved the hero once more for Dundalk, as his strike was enough to get past Cork City in the FAI Cup final at the Aviva on Sunday.

Towell may have scored the winner, but Daryl Horgan should be given his share of the plaudits after a lung busting run in the 107th minute that set-up the winner.

The former Leeside wing produced the best moment of the game as he raced into the Cork City box and pulled it back for Towell to fire past Mark McNulty.

Over 25,000 were in attendance at the Aviva, and they were fully in the swing of things on Irish club football's biggest day.

The game proved to be a scrappy affair for the most part, with both sides erring on the side of caution with a clear sight of goal hard to come by.

Billy Dennehy was a danger all game, and he set up the first opportunity of note, crossing for Mark O'Sullivan who headed straight at Gary Rogers in the Dundalk goal.

That chance seemed to wake Dundalk up and they began to dominate possession, with Ronan Finn striking an effort just wide of McNulty's post.

City's set piece was causing Dundalk keeper Rogers all sorts of problems and they nearly profited from a mistake after a mis-placed throw found the feet of Dennehy, who crossed for his centre halves in the box only for Andy Boyle to spare his keepers blushes.

The second half saw little improvement in attacking play, but David McMillian remained a constant threat for Dundalk and he forced McNulty into a good save.

The game descended into a sloppy affair and extra time was inevitable, and after Towell's excellent finish, a tiring Cork could never get themselves back on level terms, meaning Dundalk do the much vaunted double for the first time since 1988.
